CPhI Russia: Platform to connect, build and nurture ties

Our Bureau, MumbaiThursday, March 23, 2017, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

The Russian pharma market is positioned at the forefront of pharmerging markets and is expected to reach a value of $31.2 billion by 2019. The country has a strong base for international pharma companies with an overwhelming 76 per cent of total pharmaceutical sales attributed to imported drugs. Now many more foreign manufacturers looking to capitalise on this attractive market.

With Russia’s Pharma 2020 plan in motion, demand for international pharmaceutical ingredients, manufacturing and packaging equipment is flourishing in the country and CIS region. The Russian State Duma (Parliament) has introduced legislation in recent years to support the plan, including cash subsidies of up to 50 per cent of the cost of production for Russian companies manufacturing new drugs.

Russia’s 2020 plan aims for foreign drug manufacturers to commit to produce drugs within the country and international players are using this opportunity to cement a foothold in the region. The recent acquisition of Indian giant Sun Pharma of Russian Biosintez sees a new opportunity for other Indian pharma to follow through with this strategy, particularly targeting Russian demand for pharma ingredients.

CPhI Russian expo
CPhI Russia @IPhEB returns to the Russian capital as the Government’s Pharma 2020 plan continues to stimulate demand for international pharmaceutical ingredients, manufacturing and packaging equipment. The event’s 4th edition will see the P-MEC zone – for pharma machinery specialists and the Innopack zone – for pharma packaging professionals and will be featuring a three-day trade show, the content-led IPhEB Conference (Forum) and numerous networking opportunities.

Taking place at the JSC VDNH (VVC), Moscow from March 28-30, 2017, the event is the central hub for buyers and sellers within the region, providing a vital platform where pharma executives can connect, build and nurture existing relationships.

The event is known for providing interesting business opportunities in the booming Russian pharma market and gain access to the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Central East European (CEE) regions.

This year there is a strong interest in improving the country’s manufacturing capabilities and upgrading infrastructure to GMP standards, and this is driving an increased participation of API manufacturers, distributors and machinery manufacturers in the event.

The reported upgrading of existing manufacturing sites towards GMP standards as well as an increase in demand for foreign investment, due to import grow and government has fuelled international funding.

Collectively, the partnerships and deals struck at CPhI Russia have helped establish Russia at the forefront of pharmerging markets . This, coupled with a Government commitment to invest nearly $5 billion in funding to bring existing manufacturing sites to GMP standards, is driving increased interest in the event. Under the new plan, foreign investment is also encouraged through a fast-track approval process and tax incentives.

The event will be gathering more than 3000 attendees from 64 countries, and 199 exhibitors expected from 24 countries including China, India, Italy, South Korea and the United States, to network and do business with the top pharma ingredients, manufacturers, packaging experts, and machining specialists in the region. Exhibitors range from pharma ingredients, machinery and packaging.
Last year the event saw over 3000 attendees gather at the JSC VDNH (VVC) from March 30 to April 1, 2016.

“We are seeing a steady growth in three main areas driven by a gentrifying healthcare sector, a rising local population and government support for domestic manufacturing. Currency variation aside, the pharma market is growing at just under 10 per cent year-on-year and distributors, APIs manufacturers and machinery providers are seeing high demand across Russia and CIS countries. Traditionally, Russia has been a hard market to enter and that is why CPhI Russia has become so intertwined with the market’s growth”, commented Orhan Caglayan, Brand Director at CPhI Russia.

“The Russia pharma market has yet to reach its full potential and by bringing together regional companies with C-level executives, we hope to speed its development. The unique content and market analysis at the event are essential in helping both domestic and international companies evaluate best opportunities for partnerships and growth”, added Caglayan.
