In recognition of PHFI's outstanding contribution to skill building initiatives and advancement of knowledge in the Indian healthcare sector, the Quality Council of India (QCI) awarded the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) the prestigious QCI- DL Shah Platinum award for skill building initiatives of primary care physicians in chronic conditions in India.
The Platinum award was presented to PHFI by Baijayant Jay Panda, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog, Government of India during the inaugural session of the 12th National Quality Conclave in Delhi recently. Professor K. Srinath Reddy, President, PHFI, Professor. D Prabhakaran, Vice President, Research and Policy, PHFI and Dr Sandeep Bhalla, Programme Director, Trainings, Centre for Chronic Conditions and Injuries, PHFI received the award on behalf of the PHFI team.
Professor K. Srinath Reddy, President, PHFI said, “Our health systems can be effective and equitable only when primary health care is widely accessible and scientifically of sound quality. The award exemplifies PHFI's Mission which is to contribute to the better quality healthcare of all citizens, especially through skill development and knowledge advancement in primary health care. We owe a debt of gratitude to Government of India, State Governments and all our partners for recognising PHFI efforts and continuously working with us to raise India's health to global standards.”
India is experiencing a rapid health transition with a rising burden of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs). In 21st century, where India is making marked economic progress, it is confronting an ever increasing burden of NCDs while still continuing to fight against communicable diseases.
Overall, NCDs are emerging as the leading cause of deaths in India accounting for over 6 million deaths in 2016 (GBD2016). PHFI continues to be recognised for efforts in skills building in the area of chronic conditions in India. The capacity building initiatives in chronic conditions by the Public Health Foundation of India currently operates in over 500 centers in 23 States and 03 Union Territories covering more than 100 cities all across the country. Under the guidance of eminent 65 national experts and 504 faculty (diabetologist, endocrinologists, obstetricians and gynaecologists, ophthalmologists, cardiologists, internists and pulmonologists) in the respective cities, these initiatives have trained over 20000 primary care physicians till date. PHFI is running eleven capacity building programmes with various renowned National and International stakeholders.
The Public Health Foundation of India has been recognised in Skill Development and has been a recipient of the following awards. BMJ India award in 2014 as a finalist for excellence in medical education for its flagship Diabetes Programme.
PHFI received the PHD Chamber award for Excellence in Skill Development (2015-2016); this was awarded by the Honourable Home Minister Shri. Rajnath Singh, Government of India.PHFIs Certificate Course in Gestational Diabetes won the FICCI Healthcare Excellence award in 2015. ASSOCHAM bestowed PHFI with a commendation certificate in recognition for outstanding contribution for best NGO - skill development for the year (2015- 2016).
In 2017, ASSOCHAM Silver Award for best NGO for Skill Development was presented to PHFI by Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister of Skill Development Government of India. The capacity building programmes have been recognised by the National Health Mission, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India for last two years as an innovative model of education which was presented at the National Summit on Good and Replicable Practices and Innovations in Public Healthcare Systems, held at Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh in August 2016, and Indore, Madhya Pradesh in July 2017.
