Dr Vinod P Shah, Ph.D, of VPS Consulting, LLC has received the 2017 Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist award instituted by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists(AAPS) at a recent AAPS meeting in San Diego, California, USA.
Dr Shah is the highest cited pharmaceutical Scientist at US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and an AAPS past president. Dr Shah is recognized for his contributions to the development of methodology and standards for dissolution/drug release of various types of drug products to assure product quality and performance. He has developed several regulatory guidelines with "How to Information" in the area of bioanalytical method validation, dissolution, bioavailability/bioequivalence, Scale - up and Post Approval Changes (SUPAC), and established the scientific basis for the Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS).
The award is intended to recognize the accomplishments of an individual that have been outstanding because of the impact of his/her work in the pharmaceutical sciences, regulatory and/or technology. The work must have moved significantly the frontier of the field. It must be demonstrated by a continued effort that involves the testing and establishment of basic concepts.
These concepts must have important scientific significance and have stimulated research investigations by others.
All of these Dr Shah’s contributions have had a significant impact in simplifying worldwide unified regulatory criteria related to dissolution and, in the case of BCS, reducing the regulatory burden while maintaining drug product quality. Currently his research involves a science-based approach to a Topical Drug Classification System (TCS) similar to BCS.
The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) is a professional, scientific organization of approximately 9,000 members employed in academia, industry, government, and other research institutes worldwide. Founded in 1986, AAPS advances the capacity of pharmaceutical scientists to develop products and therapies that improve global health.
SPDS (Society of Pharmaceutical Dissolution Science) is proud of Dr Shah’s achievement and he is the only and the first Indian to receive this honour and distinction till today.
