Peethaambaran Kunnathoor, ChennaiTuesday, January 30, 2018, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

The seventh national convention of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), to be held in Chennai on February 10 and 11, is set to unite all the key sectors of pharma industry and profession to jointly spell out a ‘clear road map’ for the government to ramp up growth of the whole pharmaceutical sector of the country with emphasize on industry, regulatory and academia.

On completion of the convention, the association will submit a 10-point roadmap to the union government suggesting it to ensure more efficient measures for the growth of all segments in pharma like R&D and manufacturing, regulatory harmonization, medical devices, community pharmacy, pharmacy practice, pharmaco-vigilance and pharmacy education.

There will be proposals on what would be the developments in the areas of pharma industry, regulatory mechanism, academic sector and so on in 2030. Further the industry wants to know in what way the government is moving ahead to propel the pharma industry in India to become pioneer in the world, said S V Veeramani, chief patron of the National Convention.

The growth strategy will also seek government’s attention for positive steps for attracting more investors in key sectors of the industry. The five panel discussions in the two days convention will chalk out the strategic 10-point programs with suggestions for consideration by government. The theme of the event is, “Pharma Vision 2030 – Planning the Future.”

“We have a great vision, a big dream backed by a strong team. The vision will be greater and the dream will become bigger if the government creates conducive atmosphere for growth in all spheres. We are dreaming far bigger than the western industry people. We think that Indian pharma market is the most advanced regulated market in the world. If the potential of the pharma industry is strongly utilized and more and more advancement in regulation is established, Indian pharma industry will become bigger and greater than the US FDA in another ten years. IPA envisions such a prospect, and for that we will present the roadmap to the government,” Veeramani told Pharmabiz.

He said the government must motivate the industry for a positive growth culture to catch up with fully advanced pharma industries in the western world. With this motive in mind, the association is re-articulating its vision for a continued growth and investments in various sectors in the industry. Academic support is inevitable part for research and development, so academies need to deepen their engagement with industry. Similarly, the doctor-pharmacist relation has to be strengthened for good medical practice and good pharmacy practice. Pharma vision 2030 gives significance to these areas predominantly.

“Only when we have a dream, we will work for it and make a roadmap. We want more researches, more innovations and more possible areas in biologicals and biosimilars. From contract manufacturing we must develop into more of innovating nature. To achieve these goals we must have strategies and policies. This IPA convention will create a platform to deliberate on these issues. Experts from industry, academia, trade and regulatory will take part in the brainstorming sessions and they will outline issues they see as holding back growth, and draw out a roadmap for pharma sector that requires the government’s immediate intervention to enable speedy growth,” Veeramani added.
