Neuro-nutrition is an integral part of healing in brain injuries. Therefore, dedicated nutrition support teams and protocols in hospitals is seen to be right way in addressing undernourished patients, stated Dr N K Venkataramana, founder & chief neurosurgeon, Brains Neuro Spine Centre Hospital.
Studies have proved that the absence of adequately nourished feeding practices in the intensive care units(ICUs) face the challenges of delayed wound healing and increased hospital stay. This in turn leads to higher incidence of hospital acquired infection because of low immunity which finally could lead to morbidity in many cases, he added.
“We see the importance of neuro-nutrition vital for accident trauma cases. Even for brain related disorders like epilepsy and stroke, the requirement of adequate antioxidants to reduce the oxidative stress in the brain is vital. In order to prevent cognitive decline with ageing, adequate nutrition is seen to have beneficial impact”, said Dr. Venkataramana at the first national conference on Neuro-nutrition in Bengaluru. The event organised by the Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN) & Brains Hospital also released the nutritional guidelines for the brain.
Brain development from the foetus stage to geriatric phase need adequate nutrition to prevent deformity, dysfunction and degeneration. “Now the brain fastidious as it is highly selective and sensitive when it comes to nutrition. Different components of food contribute to the growth and network of effective brain functioning throughout life. Nutrition requirement commences from per-conception phase where folic acid supplements prevent mal-development of the brain. We have seen impaired nutrition to be the cause of reduction in brain volume. There is also need for maximum supplementation during a child’s growing phase . Right through one’s life too selective nutrients are essential to maintain healthy functioning of both brain and body,” stated Dr. Venkataramana.
Right quantity of nutritious food prevents illness, speeds up recovery and regenerates the human body. Special supplements augment immunity. Therefore choice of food, method of cooking, eating, timing, quality and quantity cannot be undermined. Anti-inflammatory foods, ketotic and immunogenicity diets are likely to play a key role in the future. Of course, those prone to food allergies would need to opt for alternate choices, he said.
“Brain and body need nutrition to enable synthesis, signaling, repair and remodeling at cellular level. We have seen food practices significantly alter brain function. A healthy brain takes care of the body’s wellness. Nutrition defends diseases. Deficiencies of micro nutrients causes cognitive decline and depression. Nutritious food supply mechanism has large implications to protect the brain from damage, support its functional capacity and counteract effects of ageing, Therefore nutrition is key for prevention and treatment,” stated Dr. Venkataramana.
