The foundation stone is to be laid on September 16 by the state chief minister, J.Jayalalitha. This is the third new medical college hospital proposed by the Tamil Nadu government. Earlier it had given its nod for medical college hospitals in Kanyakumari and Vellore. It is stated that the state government would complete the construction of the proposed medical college before applying to the Medical Council of India and the Union Health Ministry for registration. Once completed along with the proposed ones at Kanyakumari and Vellore, the state would have 12 medical colleges under the government control. Currently nine are functional in the state. Meanwhile construction of the medical colleges at Kanyakumari and Vellore is in full swing. Academic sessions are expected to commence next year, according to government sources.
