Live surgeries would be performed on three kabaddi players and a football player, Dr. David V.Rajan, President, IAS said. Demonstration of athroscopic surgeries, a sub-speciality of orthopaedics and done for sport injuries of knee, shoulder and elbow, to correct ligament tears, recurrent dislocation of the shoulder and elbow joint ailments without opening the joint, were demonstrated by three specialists from France and two others from Japan and Netherlands. As labral tears and dislocation of the shoulder were very common among bowlers and athletes, arthroscopy was the ideal treatment, according to Dr. David V.Rajan, stating further that it enabled the athlete to get back to physical activity sooner. Stating that in knee surgery, too, cartilage and ligament tears could be treated arthroscopically, Rajan claimed that rehabilitation was thus easier and faster, and the athletes were able to return to their original level of athletic activity much earlier.
