Ayurveda, the indigenous healthcare system of the country, had been lacking attention from the government level; thereby the country could not recognize this ancient science as a mainline treatment method. However, at present, there is a need felt to focus on the growth of this sector with priority, says Union Minister for Human Resources and Science & Technology, Dr Murali Manohar Joshi.
The minister, who inaugurated the three day National Symposium of Ayurvedic Drug Manufacturers' Association (ADMA) at New Delhi on February 13, said that the ayurvedic industry, as it is happening in the other sectors, should take up its various issues to the government rigorously.
"Similarly, the Department of ISM should focus on compiling and transcribing the database of this indigenous science with the help of information technology to promote Ayurveda among the modern world, thereby supporting the exports from the sector," he said.
The first day Symposium started with workshop on the standardization and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). At the inaugural ceremony, eminent and senior personalities in the Ayurveda industry and research field were honored with the nation's prestigious awards. Malti Sinha, secretary, Department of ISM, in her key address, said that the government is all set to promote the ayurvedic sector with various schemes that the department has already announced in its 2002-03 annual plan and in the Tenth Plan.
Dr Narendra Bhatt, general secretary, ADMA, welcomed the guests and delegates from all across the country at the opening function.
