The Department of Cardiology, Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences would be organizing a half-day seminar on the feasibility and need for use of trans-radial approach to angioplasty and angiography on May 4, 2003.
Dr B K Goyal, Dean and Head of Cardiology Department, Bombay Hospital would be discussing the use of the transradial technique at length along with live relay of cases at the S P Jain Auditorium at the hospital.
Though the trans-radial approach has yet to catch with the medical fraternity in the country, Bombay Hospital has been performing these surgeries for quite some time now. Till date, Dr. Goyal himself has performed this procedure on more than 50 patients. According to Dr. Goyal, in India, about 40,000 patients suffer from some form of heart diseases that require interventional measures.
“With Trans-radial interventions, chances of bleeding and complications that arise from these procedures could be reduced. Moreover it is also the preferred choice especially with females who sometimes get uncomfortable with interventions in the groin area,” he says.
According to him, after performing the surgery the patient can move about freely within hours doing his regular duties and without any hassles. This is not possible in case of groin surgery, which needs bed-rest and hospitalization for minimum 24 hours and more, making it strenuous to the patient, he said.
