Two hospitals with state of the art facilities have come up in the villages of Damal and Thandalam in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu, constructed with financial assistance from the Japanese Government. Sources told Pharmabiz.com that both the 10 bed each hospitals, set up at an investment of Rs.13 lakh each, were constructed by the Voluntary Health, Education and Rural Development (VHERDS), the NGO into community health, education and rural development promoted by the Kanchi Kamakoti Peeth of Kanchipuram. Each hospital has five doctors into general medicine and six paramedics to take care of the needs of the patients. Some of the most modern equipments at these remote village hospitals were supplied free of cost by SOSVA, as VHERDS has a tie with this American company for a free medical equipment supply programme in the country. VHERDS has entrusted Abhiman, another leading NGO in the state, to run and maintain the hospital, said sources. Numerous villagers in the region have been benefited by the hospitals, which started functioning recently, as these villages had lacked proper medicare facilities. While Damal is situated near to the National Highway, Thandalam is situated in an interior undeveloped area, said sources. Financial assistance for the hospitals were sanctioned through the Japanese Consulate in Chennai, and the consulate offers similar help to four to five projects in the state annually, said sources.
