In an effort to help people with depression and panic disorders, GlaxoSmithKline launched http://www.CRBalance.com, a new interactive web site that provides a secure, personalized online support program for Paxil CR (paroxetine HCl) Controlled-Release Tablets' patients. CRBalance.com offers "Help Along the Way" including customized tools to help patients suffering with depression and panic disorders.
Studies indicate almost half of patients on antidepressants discontinue their medication within the first three months of treatment due to adverse events. Since compliance with medicines is often difficult for patients taking antidepressants, CRBalance.com provides tools such as a day-to-day treatment tracker, to help them stay with their treatment regimen.
CRBalance.com also encourages effective communication between patients and healthcare providers with worksheets for doctor visits, medication and prescription refill reminders.
"GlaxoSmithKline created this truly unique web site because we understand the need for, and value of, innovative patient support programs," said Bonnie Rossello, Vice President, Cardiovascular/Neuroscience, GlaxoSmithKline. "The online CRBalance program aims to provide patients treated with Paxil CR with a step-by-step guide to help support them throughout the course of treatment and achieve optimal treatment results."
CRBalance.com offers a number of resources in which patients can track their symptoms regularly throughout their treatment, as well as discuss their progress with their physician. Enrolled CRBalance.com users create their own unique profile, which captures the patients' condition and treatment information. The program also features tools including e-newsletters that change as the patient's treatment progresses, optional surveys to track the patients progress and behavior changes, a to-do list to help manage their treatment needs, and inspiring quotes. In fact, according to a recent survey, 73% of adult internet users reported that the internet had improved the health information and services they received.
"CRBalance.com is a unique patient support program because it recognizes and addresses the different needs of people suffering from depression and panic disorders," said Robert N. Golden, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, University of North Carolina School of Medicine. "By using this support program, patients treated with Paxil CR are in control and can make their treatment process a part of their daily lives in the privacy of their own homes or at any location that they choose. CRBalance.com gives patients the information and tools designed to make their lives better and their treatment process more meaningful."
CRBalance.com provides resources that encourage interaction between patients and their physicians to support treatment compliance, a well-documented problem with antidepressant medications. Findings from a Journal of the American Medical Association study suggest that frequent physician-patient contact may increase the probability that patients will continue therapy.
