Manipal Hospital to focus on neuro otology, audiology and airway surgeries

Manipal Hospital’s recent foray into neuro otology and audiology among tumour cases and cochlear implants, which delivers the power of hearing to the children born deaf, is the current focus of the department going by the number of such cases that are being recently detected by its specialists. The Hospital is also the only institute in the country to be recognised by the National Board of Examinations for post graduate study in the ENT. The panel of ENT surgeons are also performing a number of rare airway surgeries on newborns. At a two day symposium on ENT technology held in the hospital premises where renowned consultants in the field of ENT surgery and neurosurgery from across India deliberated scientific sessions on the various aspects of deafness brought forth the point that ear, nose and throat need to be diagnosed during any health diagnosis programmes as they were sensitive and prone to be affected in stroke, hypertension, tumour and trauma. The emphasis of the symposium is on the assessment of a deaf child and neonates. The latest diagnostic procedures in audiology surgeries for vertigo, management of tumours in the ear region, management of imbalances including posturography and craniocorpography and technological developments in hearing aids among others are covered. Panel discussions are held on advances in the field of vertigo and tinnitus. According to Dr. S L Mondal, department of ENT Manipal Hospital and chairperson of the symposium, constant updating skills in medicine more so ENT will help to provide faster diagnosis and the right line of treatment as ear nose and throat are affected in several disease profiles among patients.
