Accelrys opens R&D centre at International Tech Park, Whitefield

Accelrys, a subsidiary of Pharmacopeia Inc., has opened its R&D Center, Accelrys Software Solutions Private Limited, in India at the International Tech Park at Whitefield in Bangalore. The development center will be responsible for software development work for the parent company addressing the needs of major pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical companies. Accelrys plans to make a "multi-million dollar" investment in this centre, the third for the company after San Diego, USA and Cambridge, UK. "Our products are very specialized, we provide CAD CAM like solutions to the drug discovery and informatics market. Bangalore is an excellent choice for Accelrys because of the potential in the market, the talent of the people and with 70 per cent of our customers located in the Asia-Pacific region, it brings us closer to our customers," Dr. Joseph A. Mollica, chairman, president and CEO, Pharmacopeia, Inc. said at a press conclave here. Bangalore staff will represent about one-third of the global R&D teams in the adding to the current locations in San Diego, California and Cambridge in the United Kingdom," he added. "The company re-invests 25 per cent of its revenues in research and development. The Accelrys software covers gene sequence analysis, proteomics to inorganic chemistry and formulation design used by research companies. Accelrys' supports customers worldwide. The company has Centres of Excellence in San Diego, CA and Cambridge, UK. The Bangalore Centre will provide product development and testing activities to support significant collaborative projects with the San Diego and Cambridge teams. The company re-invests approximately a quarter of its revenues in the R&D conducted at these centers - a significant commitment to maintaining its technology leadership. The investment is focused in computational science software to analyze/solve key R&D problems, and informatics tools to manage and mine scientific data. The technologies are focused on two key market areas: life science research and materials research. Accelrys has integrated the two within a single technology platform that supports the whole discovery and development process. Accelrys was founded in 2001 by bringing together five leading specialist software companies Molecular Simulations inc. (MSI), Synopsys Scientific Systems, Oxford Molecular, Genetics Computer Group (GCG) and Synomics Ltd. The India operations is headed by Harsha Patel.
