The Chennai based Rigid Hospitals is conducting a two day workshop on hernia on April 5 and 6 to help the doctors and medical students update their knowledge on the latest surgical techniques in the treatment of hernia. About 250 delegates, including renowned doctors and medical students from different parts of the country are participating in the conference, scheduled with eight sessions of live hernia surgeries, according to Dr.J.S.Raj Kumar, organizer of the conference and Chief Surgeon of Rigid Hospitals. The latest techniques shown and discussed in the conference include use of ‘mesh’, inserted either by conventional surgery or through laparoscopy. Hernia is a gap developed in the abdomen wall, and muscles occur as sheets in the body and they expand and contract under pressure. If the body fails to produce collagen, the muscles fail to get back to its normal position. Hernia is normally aggravated when the patient exerts extra pressure to pass urine or stool. Hernia may occur due to excessive strain, elaborated the sources.
