Genesis Medical Systems Pvt Ltd has developed a new automated device to assess autonomic neuropathy. Apart from figuring out anomalies in the involuntary actions of the internal organs, the equipment is useful to detect the complications related to cardiac rhythm, dysfunction of stomach and intestine etc, company sources said. Developed with guidance from Dr M V Mohan, chairman of M V Diabetes Specialties Centre and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, the new machine, Canwin, has six inbuilt tests for assessing the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems of nerves, which determine the involuntary functions of organs like heart, lungs, stomach, intestine etc. They claim that the system is user-friendly and the operation can be learnt within a few hours of training. The physicians will be able to analyze the result of the tests in a two-page print out format by eliminating the need for manual recordings, readings and calculations. The instrument is useful for assessing the health of patients in the pre-operative phase. So far, specific instruments for assessing autonomic neuropathy were not available in the country, and the imported machines were very expensive, said sources. Besides Canwin, the MVDSC in association with the LN System of Chennai, has developed a software for assessing the thickness of arteries, which lead to narrowing of blood vessels causing to prevent smooth flow of blood to vital organs. The thickness of the blood could be measured accurately using the new Ma Te 1.0 software, attached to ultrasound and vascular imaging systems.
