National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has realized Rs 6.17 crore from 38 companies on account of overcharging for drugs as on June 30, 2002. The companies that have returned the overcharged amount include pharma majors like USV Limited, Glaxo Ltd, Sun Pharma Industries and Lyka Labs.
According to government records, USV Limited tops the list with Rs 2.17 crore having remitted to government on account of overcharging for its Doxycycline HCl formulation. Glaxo (I) Ltd stands second with 1.77 crore (Ranitidine formulation). Johnson & Johnson Ltd had to pay Rs 1.5 crore for its Raricap Capsules.
NPPA has issued 110 notices to various companies till date. The overcharged amounts mentioned in the show-cause notices are only tentative and the actual amount of overcharging in each case is determined after the scrutiny of the reply and documents furnished by the company.
