Oncology care provider Curie Centre of Oncology has become the second hospital in Bangalore to install the Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy (IMAT). The Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre's Department of Radiation Oncology had installed IMAT, last week, at an investment of around Rs 7.5 crore.
With Curie's "3-D" computer imagery, in IMAT, intense radiation doses are delivered directly to the tumour without affecting or damaging the surrounding healthy tissue which makes it ideal for brain cancers, head and neck cancers, prostate cancers and other cancers in which isolation of the diseased area is particularly difficult.
Dr. Ajai Kumar, chairman, Curie Centre of Oncology said, "Our endeavour is to put Bangalore on the healthcare map of the world. The setting up of the IMAT heralds a new beginning for Cancer patients in India and is a revolution in the treatment of Cancer. IMAT is sure to revolutionize the cancer treatment at a much lower and affordable cost in India." This treatment has fewer side effects and fewer long-term complications, stated Dr. Ajai Kumar.
Curie Centre of Oncology was set up in 1995 by the Soni Medical Resources at the St. John's Hospital Campus in Bangalore.
IMAT was first installed in the country at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Centre in New Delhi in 1998. The Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital in Mumbai has been offering one-year course on IMRT for the last four years. There are around 5 installations of IMAT in south India.
