40% of drug units in TN may shut for not meeting Schedule M norms

About 40% of the pharmaceutical manufacturers in Tamilnadu will have to face closure for not complying with the Schedule M norms, according to informed industry sources. And the state drug control authority is hardly functional with a full-fledged drugs controller. Nearly 60% of the manufacturers, who were yet to comply with the norms during the deadline, have started factory upgradation within the time, in which some of them are in the final stages. Whereas, the remaining 40% of the manufacturers out of total of about 800 units have not started any upgradation work. The exact number of companies, which may end up in closure, could be figured out only within two months. When contacted, the TN Pharma Manufacturers Association leaders told that the association is backing the process of Schedule M compliance and is trying to help the companies to comply with rules.
