In the light of widespread reports across the globe on fungal infection afflicting the users of a particular contact lens solution, Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), a global leader in contact lens solutions conducted awareness programmes among contact lens users in India.
AMO India invited Dr. Gunter Wong from the AMO Academy, Hong Kong to address eye care practitioners on 'Ocular Defense, Corneal Health and Cytotoxicity'. These sessions were conducted in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai between 8th and 12th April.
"In Singapore and Hong Kong there were specific government bodies which constantly monitored hospitals and that was how cases of infection amongst contact lens wearer's were reported". He further adds, "Though fungal infection amongst contact lens wearer's are not very common, in the light of the new situation it would be better to create awareness amongst practitioners before hand. Considering that India has a similar climatic condition to that of Singapore, it is important to build awareness at the earliest " said Dr. Gunter Wong.
According to Anand Mote, Product Manger, AMO (I) Eye Care, " India is a country of over 1 billion and monitoring systems akin to the West and other developed countries may be a challenge. AMO has launched an exclusive awareness program specifically targeted at contact lens practitioners as most of the queries by users are normally directed towards them." He adds, "We have already conducted 4 such seminars in key cities and plan to expand this drive to another 5 cities and reach out to as many eye care professionals as possible and update them on this important issue".
