Western India accounts for half of India's biotech revenue

India's biotech sector reported 37.5 per cent growth with total revenue of Rs 6,521 crore ($1.45 billion) in 2005-06 and the Western region of the country contributed 50 per cent of the total revenue as against 37 per cent by the southern region. While Western region accounted for revenue of Rs 3,234 crore ($718 million), Southern region totalled Rs 2,367 crore ($526 million). Northern region accounted for Rs 920 crore ($200 million) with a growth of 15 per cent over the comparable period last year. The turnover of Bangalore-based biotech companies crossed Rs 1,400 crore, with bio-pharma accounting for 62 per cent, Bio-services 18 per cent and Bio-industrial 12.5 per cent. Biotech exports were Rs 850 crore ($190 million). Presenting the report of the biotech in the country a the Bangalore Bio, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairperson of Vision Group of Biotechnology, said "India is changing fast in life science with the increase in availability of trade skill and quality workforce. The number of returning scientists has been adding to skill base, there by improving the standards of bio manufacturing. The clinical data research is receiving more recognition. India's drug development path is improving by rapid strides." Last year, the investment in the biotech sector was Rs 1,650 crore as against Rs 1,215 crore marking an increase of 36 per cent. Around 320 firms were registered in India during this period, of which 175 companies were in Karnataka and Bangalore secured 158 of them. During the previous year, Karnataka registered 27 firms, while rest of the country got 28 firms.
