Cisco, Satyam Computers to invest $10 mn in JV to replicate 911 services

Information technology majors, Cisco Systems and Satyam Computers have teamed up to focus on optimizing, deploying and managing solutions for handling medical distress situations and health management solutions for global markets. The two companies are investing over $10 million to form a separate entity to replicate the 911 emergency services of Satyam in other geographies. "With Satyam Computers, we intend to expand the 911 emergency services to all parts of the country. The core idea is to save lives that affect over one billion population in India", stated John Chambers, chairman and COO, Cisco Systems during his recent visit to Bangalore. Satyam has been offering the 911 emergency response system in Andhra Pradesh for the last one decade. The service has so far impacted 100 million people. "Using Cisco unified communication technology, we will be empowered to customize existing applications to transform current services into being more citizen friendly", stated B Ramalinga Raju, chairman, Satyam Computers. The company's model services provide individuals access to first response, professional healthcare advice and support with rapid access to trained medical experts either at designated local health centres or over a fixed mobile phone infrastructure. The company has linkages with over 100 hospitals and clinics in Andhra Pradesh and those will be leveraged for this new project. Cisco has also introduced the next stage of its TelePresence technology which allows for a virtual meeting by creating a high definition video feed and full spatial audio to create the hologram of a person appear anywhere, providing a real experience. The Cisco has now moved into a one million sq. ft facility in Bangalore. "India will be Cisco's platform for globalization, growth and country transformation efforts. We are not in India for cost and labour arbitrage. Instead our centre here will drive our strategy for emerging markets," added the Cisco chief.
