Bangalore University to get Rs 13 cr for HIV programme from Global Fund Round 7 project

Bangalore University is expected to receive Rs 13 crore from the Global Fund Round 7 project which focuses on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The amount will be utilized to support the human and institutional capacities of key counsellor training institutes in India. The details of the institutes are not available. The sanctioned amount for the entire counselling component is Rs 72.91 crore and out of which Rs 13 crore will be disbursed to the Bangalore University to implement the programme through its seven Sub Recipients in the four southern states. As part of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals, the Global Fund helps the developing nations in mitigating the impact of HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In fact the Global Fund providers are of the view that this would in turn help to reduce the impact of poverty. The Round 7 spread over a period of five years is engaged in the extensive scientific research in the area of HIV counselling and bringing out a collection of training modules. Under the project and after receiving the aid, Bangalore University will also hold the position of sub recipient in addition to being the regional sub recipient. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai is the Principal recipient of the Global Fund in India. Dr Romate John, coordinator of the Centre for Psychological Counselling, Department of Psychology will be coordinating the programme at Bangalore University for the four southern states. The purpose of the Global Fund is to attract, manage and disburse additional resources through a new public-private partnership that will make a sustainable and significant contribution to the reduction of infections, illness and death, thereby mitigating the impact caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in countries in need, and contributing to poverty reduction as part of the Millennium Development Goals. Funding is made available for proposals approved by the Global Fund Board and normally submitted to the Global Fund through a Country Coordination Mechanism (CCM).
