Malar Heart Institute opened at Malar Hospital in Chennai

Fortis Healthcare Limited which runs one of the world's largest cardiac programmes, has opened the 'Malar Heart Institute' at Malar Hospital in Chennai. The Institute will focus on acute cardiac cases. There is a dedicated advanced cardiac emergency unit. Dr K R Balakrishnan, a leading cardiac surgeon is the director of the Institute who has three decades of experience and with over 20,000 surgeries to his credit. He has the expertise in complex neonatal cardiac surgeries. He has performed three successful heart transplants and surgeries without blood transfusion. He is also a designated Surgeon by Government of Tamil Nadu. He is an Adjunct Professor of Nanotechnology at Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai and is the inventor of low cost external pump that revives Acute Heart Failure cases at home. Besides, he is also the co-inventor of Dual Poppet Heart Valve which minimizes Resistance to Blood flow across the Valve and allows Non turbulent flow. Inaugurating the cardiac facility M K Stalin, Minister for Rural Development & Local Administration, Tamil Nadu, said, "a facility like this is a boon to the patients. Our Government welcomes initiatives geared towards providing superior healthcare to the people". The 16 year-old Malar Hospitals Ltd, with 180 beds, also provides comprehensive care in gynaecology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, neurology, paediatrics, diabetics, and nephrology. Fortis Healthcare acquired Malar and has invested in its infrastructure to offer at quaternary level. There are 30 dedicated CCUs, 2 dedicated OTs, Electro Physiology Laboratory, diagnostic services and a Cath Lab. The CCUs at Malar Heart Institute will have the distinction of having 'Door of Balloon' time of 20 minutes thereby minimizing the irreversible damage to the heart. According to Shivinder Mohan Singh, CEO and managing director, Fortis Healthcare said, upgrading the standards of healthcare through superior processes and capable team specialists is the focus. The heart institute will adhere to international protocols and will be equipped to undertake complete gamut of cardiac care services ranging from prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cardiac patients. Services available at centre would include invasive and non invasive cardiology and cardiac surgery entailing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG), paediatric cardiac surgery, cardiac health checks, angioplasty, port access surgery, minimally invasive surgery, valve replacement surgery and EP studies.
