Sahyadri Hospitals, Pune is the first to receive the NeuroLogica CereTom, an intra-operative CT scanner system, which transforms the way neuro-surgeries are done in India. The device will aid in numerously to patients in terms of 'convenience and cost'. This intra-operative CT scanner system is portable, lightweight and easy to use. It can be moved to critically ill patients in wards and ICU's within minutes thus aiding them from the difficulties in transportation. Also, the patient does not need to be shifted from one table to the other to get their scan taken; the intra-operative CT scan gets fixed to the bed the patient is on. Often there is danger when a critically ill patient is transferred from one place to the other, the portability of the scanner curbs this and provides safety. The CT technology enables physicians to obtain high-quality CT images. This technology not only provides excellent quality images but does so at relatively low radiation levels as compared to the Routine CT scanner. Intra-operative CT scanner system enhances Neuro-surgeries on a real time basis. How this happens is because, the Intra-operative CT scanner system can be used in conjunction with 'Brainlab Neuro-navigation'. During surgery, the scan machine sends constant data to the navigation system thus creating multiple images to enable the surgeon to locate the changing position of structures in the skull thus conduct a smooth surgery. These real time images help detect residual tumours, confirm status of blood vessels and detect vital structures not seen by the naked eye. Commenting on this new initiative in the Neuro- Sciences department, Dr Charudutt Apte, CMD, Sahyadri Hospitals, said, "We have always believed in the '3A' principle i.e. Available, Accessible and Affordable. The best systems with utmost convenience will be made available to its patients, thus the investment in the Intra-operative CT scanner system. Further, this equipment will be accessed by our surgical team, who will benefit to a manifold extent. We are convinced this equipment will transform the way Neuro-surgeries are done at Sahyadri Hospitals. Lastly, both the CT scan and Navigation will be offered at cost effective packages making it affordable for the patient."
