Bangalore-based Sant Meditek Pvt Ltd has entered into a collaboration with Physicool, UK to introduce a new therapeutic bandage for the first time in the country. The stretchy reusable bandage is recommended to manage sprains and trauma bruises affecting the joints, thigh, shoulder and back. It will be used for sports healthcare and orthopaedic applications. The bandage can also be used in fevers to reduce the rising body temperature.
Under the collaboration, Sant Meditek will market the product across the country and South East Asia through its network of distributors. The product is currently manufactured by Physicool in UK. After Sant Meditek markets 20,000 unit a month, it will look at production of the bandage and liquid in India.
The two-year-old Sant (Surgery and Nanotechnology) Meditek has identified the land off Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore and has slated an investment of around Rs 9 crore to set up a production unit.
The novel bandage provides faster healing in a convenient fashion. It can quickly and efficiently treats inflamed muscles tendons and ligaments. In addition, it can also reduce excess swelling and discomfort after injuries.
It replaces the traditional ice pack to decrease swelling and inflammatory conditions. The product is impregnated with a solution that rapidly cools the body through evaporation.
The dual action of cooling and compression brings in the much-needed relief. This is an advanced non-invasive technology which is indispensable in India, Dr H N Nagaraj, chairman and managing director, Sant Meditek Pvt Ltd told Pharmabiz.
Dr Nagaraj who is a consultant orthopaedic and arthroplasty surgeon has worked with leading medical research labs in Europe found the need for the product in the country. "It is estimated that India accounts for 1.5 million osteoporosis fractures and sprains are also common, which if neglected becomes difficult to treat. The novel therapeutic bandage is easy to apply and speeds up the healing process," he added.
The bandage is a one-time purchase and priced at Rs 650 and with an additional Rs 50 for the liquid during reuse.
The company has already contacted National Institute of Sports, National Cricket Academy and other sports organizations to create massive awareness on the product. Sprain is a frequent injury in humans that results in pain, swelling and difficulty in walking on the affected side and therefore the market for the therapeutic bandage is huge, said Dr Nagaraj.
The company has been engaged in research and development of implants and biomaterials to improve the faster healing process in orthopaedic surgeries including spinal chord. It currently holds a patent for Vertebroplasty instrument which facilitates application of bone cement during surgery.
