The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER)'s National Toxicology centre (NTC), established at its premises at Mohali, became the first government approved GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) centre of India. The centre has been approved for the GLP compliance by National GLP Compliance Monitoring Authority (GLP-CMA) of the Department of Science & Technology. After the approval, NTC has now become the first government centre of the country with GLP certification. The certification was provided after three-round of vigorous inspection conducted by the eminent members of GLP-CMA to approve the facility for the GLP compliance status. Based on the inspection report, it has been confirmed that the test facility at NTC is capable of conducting various toxicological and mutagenicity test/studies in compliance with OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) principles of GLP and norms. After the establishment of NTC at NIPER in the year 2005, the main objective of the centre is to conduct different pre-clinical toxicological studies in the field of pharmaceutical sciences as per schedule-Y and OECD guidelines as well as to train manpower in the area of regulatory toxicology. The certification will facilitate in the testing of new chemical entities (NCEs) for regulatory submission by different pharmaceutical industry and academia, apart from making use of the facility in internal research projects and hands-on training of research students.
