The School of Pharmacy & Technology Management of SVKM's NMIMS University held its Convocation-2009 on July 3, 2009, where 138 post graduate students were awarded with the degree of M Pharm in Pharmaceutics, Pharm Chem, Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy and two students with Doctorate Degree.
Pankaj R Patel, chairman and managing director of Cadila Healthcare Ltd was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address on this occasion. Amrish Patel, chancellor of the university, presided over the ceremony.
In his convocation address, Patel congratulated the graduates and expressed that he was not that fortunate to get the world-class facilities which the students today enjoyed. He congratulated the chancellor and the faculty of the school for providing excellent facilities for education and research comparable to international standards. He was also happy to see that school has developed modernized lab for pharma biotechnology.
Patel expressed concern over the quality of faculty across the country and stressed upon the need for life long learning activities as an integral part of faculty activities. He requested that to improve upon the faculty shortage and quality, young graduates should join teaching as a career.
He also advised graduates to follow WHO code of conduct for pharmacists for excellent professional behaviour and highlighted important factors which they should not neglect for the growth in profession.
Dr Rajan Saxena, vice-chancellor of the NMIMS, in his welcome address said, "The purpose of education is to develop inquisitive minds. This needs to encourage cross fertilization of ideas. Unfortunately, until now our entire education system has been geared to comply with a standard model which rarely takes into account the evolving needs of the industry. It leaves very little scope for the faculty innovation and research. We are today witnessing the consequence of such an ill-conceived bureaucratic model of education."
Talking about University's vision, he said, "The NMIMS wishes to change this entire paradigm. For which we believe that we need to aggressively pursue the agenda of teaching and research excellence in all our Schools. Hence our dream is that the University should play a definitive role in the 21st century technological, management and organizational research and educate to develop individuals who are socially sensitive and impact global development. Our mission therefore will be to provide to the nation good quality trained human resources who are socially sensitive, have inquisitive mind and persistence to change their own and organization's lives and contribute to make India a knowledge super power and the world a better place to live."
On this occasion, faculty members Dr Addepalli, Dr Meena Chintamaneni, Dr Nancy Pandita, Anand Mahajan, Dr Rachna were awarded for their excellences in the respective areas, while non teaching staff - Indrayani Gaikwad, Yogendra Patil, Shailesh Indulkar, Kavita Nitore and Chandrakant Bagul were awarded for their best services.
Medley Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Themis Medicare, Ambernath Organics Pvt Ltd and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd sponsored Gold Medal award to the toppers in various specializations.
