IAIA Lifetime Achievement Award for Subhash Bagaria

Subhash Bagaria (right) receiving the award from Dr. Lalji Singh The Indian Analytical Instruments Association bestowed the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Subhash Bagaria, chairman of both Millipore India, a leading life science company, and Kemwell, a leading pharmaceuticals contract manufacturer at Hyderabad. Subhash Bagaria was also inducted into the Hall of Fame by the IAIA at a glittering ceremony organized on the occasion of Analytica Anacon at the Hitex Exhibition Centre. The award recognizes over three decades of visionary leadership by Subhash Bagaria and his pioneering efforts in bringing and establishing world class technologies, capabilities and infrastructure to India in diverse areas such as life science services for the research, development and production of biopharmaceutical drugs, validation and process development facilities, contract manufacturing, drug development services, NAT technology for promoting use of safe blood in hospitals, training and development services, analytical instruments and more. With rare business acumen and market insights, Subhash Bagaria - a Commerce graduate with an OPM from The Harvard Business School has been at the forefront in building institutions of excellence in their respective areas of business. At the age of 27, he started as a distributor for Sigma Aldrich, Becton Dickinson, Pharmacia (now GE Lifesciences), Waters and Millipore. In 1986, he formed Millipore India, a JV with Millipore Corporation, USA. Over the last twenty-three years Bagaria has grown Millipore India into an undisputed market leader providing products and services that improve productivity in biopharmaceutical manufacturing and in life science research. His pioneering efforts include setting up India's first dedicated filtration validation and process development services laboratory that partners with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in optimizing their manufacturing processes, ensuring the quality and safety of drugs manufactured, and in scaling up difficult to manufacture biologics. As chairman and MD of Kemwell, Subhash Bagaria has transformed Kemwell into a leading provider of formulations contract manufacturing and development services. Today, Kemwell has four manufacturing facilities in Bangalore, India and one facility in Uppsala, Sweden. Kemwell employs over 1000 people worldwide and has long-standing relationships with five of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies such as Bayer, GSK, J&J, Novartis and Pfizer. In the large molecules space, Kemwell is building a new biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Bangalore, India, in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany. In addition to building these companies, Subhash Bagaria also has interest in life science start-ups such as ReaMetrix and Pluromed that are developing cutting edge technologies. A new venture promoted by Bagaria is Prescient Biosciences; a newly established training and development institute to help young Indian talent from industry and academia acquire and develop 'hands on' laboratory skills in the latest emerging biotechnology techniques. Subhash Bagaria has brought together some of the leading instruments majors, academicians and scientific advisors to help scale up the quality of talent available to Indian industry in the biotechnology domain. Among Bagaria's philanthropic efforts are Charity Foundations that provide scholarships to deserving students and medical help to needy patients. The Foundation has set up the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit in Narayana Hrudayalaya, Bangalore, India and also a Tibetan Medical Center in Bangalore, India, in association with His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Tibetan Medical Center located at Dharamsala in North India.
