The BGS Global Hospitals has opened its Cancer Institute which will offer radiation, medical and surgical oncology. It has also installed the PET CT (positron emission tomography/computerized tomography) facility which is a benchmark in the diagnosis, planning and treatment of cancer. The PET CT facility helps the specialist to intervene accurately and optimize treatment combining the metabolic information from PET and structural information from CT in a single session. Dr N K Venkataramana, vice-chairman, BGS Global Hospitals said that with the increase in life expectancy, more and more cancers are being detected across the world. The need for cancer treatment is gaining importance. “There is lot of scope for research to understand the disease and also to formulate effective therapeutic modalities. In spite of several technological advancements, we are still far away from total cure,” he added. Patients benefit from a comprehensive diagnostic whole-body survey in a single session. The high definition PET CT Scanner has the ability to assess the functional and biochemical processes of the body’s tissues, which are altered in the earliest stages of virtually all diseases. PET CT detects these changes before they are eventually detected by MRI or CT scan. The facility was inaugurated by former president of India Dr Abdul Kalam Azad along with chief minister of Karnataka, Yeddiyurappa. With this, the hospital added another state of the art technology to its advanced infrastructure and fast expanding facilities. Last year, president Kalam had inaugurated the neuro-navigation equipment and the Institute of Neurosciences.
