Indian hospitals beefing up presence in Bangla

Some of the major hospitals in South India are beefing up their presence in Bangladesh. While two major hospitals Apollo and Healthcare Global Enterprises Ltd (HCG) already  have a major presence in the Bangladesh, Narayana Hrudayalaya which has a substantial  chunk of its patients from Bangladesh  accessing its facility in Bangalore, is keen on entering the country soon. Apollo Hospitals in Dhaka is the only 'JCI Accredited' 450-bed multi-disciplinary super-specialty tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh. The facility was set up on  April 16 , 2005. HCG, India's dedicated cancer care centre in the private hospital segment ,which received a fund infusion of Rs. 31.20 crore from Milestone Religare Investment Advisors Pvt. Ltd, a joint venture between Milestone Group & Religare Enterprises in February announced its intention to enter Bangladesh where  it has already identified the partner for a 400 bed hospital in which 50 beds are dedicated for oncology. The centre would entail an investment of around Rs. 12 crore, said Dr BS Ajaikumar, chairman HCG. Apollo Hospitals Dhaka provides comprehensive health care with the latest medical, surgical and diagnostic facilities. These services are provided by expert medical professionals, skilled nurses and technologists using state-of-the-art technology , according to Dr. Pratap Reddy, CMD, Apollo Group. On August 12, 2010, Apollo Hospitals Dhaka signed a corporate agreement with Bank Asia Ltd to provide priority corporate benefits and medical services for their Card Holders. On June 8, a health awareness programme was arranged for the members of Dhaka Club Ltd ,where Dr. Md. Shahab Uddin Talukder- Consultant and Coordinator of Interventional Cardiology and Dr. M Ali Consultant - orthopaedics delivered their presentation respectively on common heart problems and on common bone joint problem and complications. On June 24 at the  13th annual general meeting of STS Holding Ltd, the owning company of Apollo Hospitals Dhaka's Managing Director ,Khondoker Monir Uddin Ahmed announced that  the company has achieved a gross profit of taka   843 million along with a net profit of taka 47million in 2009. According to the corporate information available, since its inception in 2005, a total of 229,204 patients have registered with Apollo Hospitals Dhaka (AHD) and over 645,525 patients availed out-patient consultation across 29 disciplines. Over 20,586 successful surgeries have been carried out at AHD till date. Apollo Heart Centre offers  congenital heart surgery and has completed 1,728 successful cardiac surgeries. World-class cardiac catheterization for the patients suffering from heart diseases is also provided here.  The facility has conducted 4,410 angiography and 1,032 angioplasty procedures The first Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) closure by non-surgical procedures was conducted  in the cath lab on July 19, 2009 using 24 mm ASD device closure. To date, there have been four ASD closures at AHD cath lab. .The world-class stroke centre at AHD is the pioneer and only comprehensive centre of its kind in Bangladesh providing complete stroke-recovery solution. AHD has achieved 1,866 successful neuro surgeries to date. It provides integrated comprehensive solutions for patients suffering from neurological dysfunction. Around 3,204 orthopaedic surgeries have been successfully completed in AHD since 2005, which includes 36 hip replacement and 55 knee replacement surgeries.  Its  super specialized dermatology department is providing skin balancing treatment. The  laser centre performs  surgery with PDL and multiplex as the only centre in Bangladesh having both. Its ultramodern phototherapy centre is equipped with latest PUVA and narrow band UVB chamber. AHD has also completed 1,152 high-end plastic and reconstructive surgeries so far. The facility accounts for  2,518 general surgeries been successfully performed. The surgical centre has started to perform liver resection surgery, the first of which has been successfully carried out on a 34-year old female patient (left lobectomy) on November 23, 2009. AHD accounts for 10 renal transplants which are  successfully completed and it is the first of its kind among the private hospitals in Bangladesh for such procedures.Further it has also the pioneer centre to carry out two cochlear implants for permanently deaf patients among the private hospitals in Bangladesh. Apollo mother & child centre is providing comprehensive treatment in specialitiess like obstetrics/gynaecologygy, neonatologypaediatricscs, and fertility. It  has opened a dedicated paediatric in-patient wing at Apollo children’s centre at Level-5 of the hospital on June 1, 2009. The paediatric IP wing has 24 standard beds and eight single private cabins and has proven to be a successful show-case of patient care. The  Lab Medicine Department has started Plasma ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone) Test in March 2009, which is particularly important in the differential diagnosis of insufficiency and hypersecretion of adrenal gland. The department has also initiated a unique approach in diagnosis and management of sepsis through measurement of serum procalcitonin in August 2009. This blood test can also be used to monitor the course and prognosis of life-threatening systemic bacterial infections,as well as a guide to the initiation and duration of antibiotic therapy. The department has introduced Rapid Influenza Detection Test (RIDT) for patients with influenza-like illness and pneumonia in November 2009. This test can reduce the use of antibiotics and detect and distinguish between influenza A and B viruses. AHD has introduced two new vaccines, Influvac and Prevnar, in its vaccination centre in November 2009, which are the first of their kinds in Bangladesh. Influvac is the flu vaccine recommended for those with increased risk of flu and flu-related complications, while Prevnar is the vaccine effective for children below two years of age for pneumococcal diseases. AHD has started to use non-touch infra-red thermometer for its patient service in November 2009, which so far, is not available anywhere in Bangladesh except in this hospital.
