The department of ENT and head and neck surgery of Secunderabad based Yashoda Hospitals, along with Association of Otolaryngology of India (AOI), AP and AOI, Hyderabad,  conducted an international workshop on sialendoscopy, 'ISWS 2010' on November 14 at Yashoda Hospital. The one-day workshop was organised along with the academic collaboration of the most coveted European Sialendoscopy Training Center (ESTC), Geneva, Switzerland. It was the first workshop on sialendoscopy  conducted in South India.

The aim of this one-day workshop was to introduce sialendoscopy to the beginners in order to keep them abreast of the  new technologies in otolaryngology.  Speaking on the occasion, Dr G S Rao, managing director, Yashoda Hospitals said, “With a view of fulfilling our commitment to deliver highest standards of medical care at economical costs, our hospital was the first to acquire the advanced sialendoscopy in Andhra Pradesh. Sialendoscopy is one of the most fascinating advancements introduced in the last few years in the field of ENT, head and neck surgery.”

Dr D S Deenadayal, senior consultant, HOD, Department of ENT and head and neck surgery, Yashoda Hospital said, “Approximately one in 10,000 people suffer from salivary gland related pathologies. With sialendoscopy all their issues can be addressed with more precision and faster results while at same time enhancing their comfort.”

Elaborating about the need for a workshop on Sialendoscopy, Dr Deendayal informed that sialendoscopy is used for both diagnostic as well as interventional procedures. With this latest advancement, treatment of the salivary glands related pathologies and disorders become easier and more precise. What used be an invasive surgery is now a semi-invasive procedure, where the patient can come get diagnosed and treated under local anaesthesia and leave the very same day. Even the cost would be significantly lesser as compared to the invasive methods.

“It is a promising new method for the diagnosis and treatment of most of the inflammatory conditions of the major salivary glands and therefore prevents salivary gland excisions,” Dr Deenadayal added.
