Novozymes, the world’s largest producer of industrial enzymes, today opened its new state-of-the art research & development centre and office at Whitefield in Bangalore. The company has invested US$ 115 million in India since 2007 which includes the acquisition of Biocon’s enzymes business and to set up the new R&D Centre.
The new Novozymes' building will house its Indian operations, including global support services and the R&D centre.
The R&D centre will now carry out the protein engineering work for the Denmark based parent company’s global requirements and will act as a resource base for the company’s global discovery projects. The centre will also serve as an application technology excellence centre for Novozymes’ global juice and wine industry requirements. The centre is actively innovating food applications for the Indian market by undertaking research to understand local needs in India. The centre foresees an important role in the Indian market for enzymatic applications in various industries.
Novozymes is the largest supplier of industrial enzymes and micro-organisms in India, catering to requirements in the detergent, food, feed, textile, leather, oils & fats, beverage alcohol, and bio-fuel industries. India is an important region for the company’s future growth plans. The new centre was inaugurated by Novozymes’ chief executive officer Steen Riisgaard and executive vice president for Research & Development Per Falholt. “We have created a modern research centre for Novozymes in India. This centre will play an important role in our efforts toward discovering new applications and technologies globally and locally,” stated Per Falholt.
Novozymes is looking to the Indian office to support its global operations, from administration to management and research & development. Novozymes India began its operations in 1983 with two employees operating from a business centre. Since then the Indian operations have grown into an organization spread across three sites in India covering manufacturing, business functions, a shared service centre, and R&D, according to the company.
