Ankur Healthcare, centre for andrology and reproductive medicine recently became Asia’s first centre to offer University recognised post graduate courses in andrology and men’s health and reproductive medicine. These courses are recognised by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).
The courses are for 18 months and are scheduled to begin in January 2011. Eligibility for the andrology course is Mch or DNB in urology or MS in general surgery, while for reproductive medicine it is MD or DNB in obstetrics and gynaecology. The cost of the course is Rs.20,000 each and during the period there will be a stipend paid to the students.
Commenting on the courses, Dr S S Vasan, managing director, Ankur Healthcare said, “Andrology and men’s health in general is a vast field of medicine which is in a very nascent stage in India. Today there are very few qualified professionals practicing andrology. Our endeavour through these courses is to encourage more doctors to take up this profession as it offers tremendous potential.”
He further informed that infertility in India is a cause for concern as research studies indicate that there is a 50 per cent increase in infertility in urban India. Thus making it essential to have more qualified professionals both in andrology which focuses on male infertility and reproductive medicine ie female infertility.
