Kerala drug authorities file case against Ayurjyothy Oushadhasala for selling drugs without licence

The drug authorities in Kerala has raided the premises of Ayurjyothy Oushadhasala at Keezhmaadu in Ernakulam district and seized drugs worth thousands of rupees for selling without drug licence. The seized items were produced in the judicial first class magistrate court at always, in Kerala.

Acting on a tip off, the ayurvedic drug inspector in Ernakulam Dr C Y John conducted the raid.

As per 33EEc of Drugs and Cosmetic Act, a case of selling drugs without licence has been registered against the company. The licence of the company was cancelled in 2006 for several other violations and it has not been renewed so far in spite of repeated filings by the firm, said Dr John.

He said the company manager, Paul Jacob, would paste his company’s label on the bottles of products manufactured by other companies, so a separate case of selling of spurious drugs was also filed against him. The seized items include some documents relating to the sale of such drugs.

The items include Desamoolarishtam, Sudarshanaarishtam, Amruthaarishtam, various types of kashaayam and choornam.

In another development, the drug inspector has inspected the factory of Kunnath Pharmaceuticals on the basis of a report by a Malayalam weekly that the drug contains huge quantity of tadalafil citrate and took samples of six batches (MP-0120, 121,122,123,124 and 125) of the latest production of Musli Power Xtra for testing. The samples were sent to the drug testing lab in Thiruvananthapuram. He said Kunnath Pharmaceuticals has recently applied for renewal of licences.

Recently, the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research (DIPS&R) had in a lab test confirmed that the ayurvedic formulation, manufactured and sold by Kunnath Pharma of Kerala, was adulterated and mixed with tadalafil.
