Manipal Health Systems has opened the Manipal Institute of Joint Replacement (MIJR). The Institute is also the Centre of Excellence allowing the healthcare major to provide the latest treatment options. The Institute will cater to the quarternary care in joint replacement. The Department of Orthopaedics has been a referral centre nationally for surgeries conducted by its orthopaedics surgeons.
MIJR will be supported by the Group’s Orthopaedic Department. Some of the services offered include joint preserving procedures, minimally invasive approaches, revision hip & knee replacement and joint replacement patient education classes, stated Rajen Padukone, CEO, Manipal Health Enterprises.
Coinciding with the opening of MIJR, a live Joint Replacement workshop was also organized. It was conducted by a leading international arthroplasty surgeon, Dr Alfred J. Tria of US who provided a surgery presentation on advanced and latest joint replacement procedures like customized fit knee replacement, using oxinium which does not wear and tear early, besides the Isolated Patello Femoral Replacement and Revision Knee Replacement, stated Dr Nagendra Swamy, president, Manipal Health Enterprises.
The event was organized to improve and understand the skills required to do complicated surgeries. “The latest advances include customized instrumentation which is prefabricated by templating the patients MRI Scan. The process saves time in the operation theatre and gives a perfect fit and offers accurate positioning of the implant which makes it last longer. Also newer implant materials are being developed which brings down near and tear of the artificial joint and increases its longevity. Oxinium is one such implant. As more and more knee replacements are performed, the rate of revision in knee replacement surgery is also on the rise, stated Dr RD Chakravarty, HOD & Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manipal Hospitals.
“It is essential for us to enhance our knowledge and improve our skills related to complex Joint Knee Replacement operations as this area of medical science has been constantly evolving with new advanced technologies and procedures. This advancement will help us to perform such complex operations effectively with ease. Our participating surgeons could view the live surgery through a webcast; and allowed interactions with Dr Tria,” said Dr Sudarshan Ballal, medical director, Manipal Health Enterprises.
Manipal Hospital already has specialized institutes like Manipal Heart Institute (MHI), Manipal Institute for Neurological Disorders (MIND), Manipal Institute of Nephrology and Urology (MINU), Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MCCC), Manipal International Institute of Dental Science (MIIDS), Manipal Institute of Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (MIDEM), Manipal Andrology and Reproductive Service (MARS) and Manipal Hospital Diagnostics Services (MHDS) amongst its 55 clinical departments.
