Metropolis Healthcare, founded in 1981, unveils Mumbai-specific survey on the presence of cholesterol in men and women. A recent survey conducted by Metropolis Healthcare ahead of the World Heart Day highlights the fact that women between 25 and 45 years have alarmingly high cholesterol & triglyceride levels which are the risk factors of heart diseases.
The survey conducted by Metropolis screened 93,316 samples across 4 tests by enzymatic methods namely cholesterol (Total) serum, triglycerides level in serum, HDL cholesterol serum and LDL cholesterol serum to evaluate risk factors for coronary diseases in both men & women.
Of the total samples screened across these 4 tests, there were 32,634 positive & 60,682 negative samples. The total number of abnormal samples received (17,379 male & 15,255 female) highlights the cholesterol & triglycerides presence in their blood stream. Although the lipid levels in men is more than that in women, 5,172 samples in women have alarmingly higher cholesterol levels over 3, 368 samples in men.
It has also been observed that other than genetic factors; obesity, stress and modern lifestyles play a dominant role in making men and women prone to coronary diseases in India. Statistics also reveal that the number of heart diseases in women has increased by 300% in the last 5 years.
Commenting on the survey, Dr. Rajesh Bendre, head of department – immunochemistry & special immunochemistry, Metropolis said, “As shown in recent literature reviews, the incidence of atherosclerosis & coronary heart disease is increasingly seen in younger age group (25-45 yrs). Screening for the associated risk factors & taking appropriate corrective action will aid in controlling this increasing incidence in heart disease. Lipid profile including Serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol is one of the basic screening tests. Associated clinical features & newer independent risk factors like serum lipoprotein (a), serum homocysteine, serum apolipoprotein A1 & B & Serum Highly sensitive C-reactive protein (HS-CRP) also should be considered for characterization of risk for heart disease in the patients”
Metropolis Healthcare firmly believes that such surveys would help identify people who are at a greater risk of heart disease thereby calling for regular screening of unhealthy cholesterol and lipid levels. Individuals will become more aware of the fact that heart disease is not limited to the elderly and will be more determined in combating it.
On account of the approaching World Heart Day, Metropolis is offering “Healthy Heart Package” along with additional tests from September 15 to 30.
It provides around 4500 specialized tests under a single roof ranging from oncology to genetics, molecular biology and immunoassays using best-of-breed and latest diagnostic equipment.
