The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued guidelines on inter-college migration of MBBS students. In its directive to the medical colleges, the  MCI has stipulated that migration of students from one medical college to another would be restricted to five per cent of the sanctioned intake of the college during the year. No migration will be permitted from one college to another located within the same city.

Over the recent past a number of private and government medical colleges have come up in the country. Earlier as there were a very few seats available for the MBBS, the demand for the course has gone many folds and the competition has also increased. Students have spread all over the country to grab a seat anywhere in any state in the country. Now with the sanction of  more seats, students are seeking to migrate from one college to another or from one state to other based on the availability of the vacancy position. Keeping this in view, the MCI has issued certain guidelines for migration of the MBBS students.

For the migration of MBBS students, one has to adhere to so many conditions. A student is permitted to migrate only if both the colleges are recognized by the centre under section 11(2) of the Indian Medical council Act 1956 and further subject to the condition that it shall not result in increase in the sanctioned intake capacity of the college. The candidate shall be eligible to apply for migration only after qualifying in the first professional MBBS exams. Migration during clinical course of study shall not be allowed.

A candidate who has applied for migration shall first obtain an NOC from the college where he/she is studying and the university to which that college is facilitated and also from the college to which the migration is sought and the university it is affiliated to. He/she shall submit the application for migration within a period of one month of passing along with above cited NOCs to the director of medical education of the state, if migration is sought within the state or to the MCI, if the migration is sought from one college to another outside the state.
