Alcon India launches LenSx laser in India at Wavikar Eye Institute for cataract surgery

Alcon India, a division of the Novartis Group launched LenSx laser, a revolutionary technology for cataract surgery at Wavikar Eye Institute for cataract surgery. Thane based Wavikar Eye Institute become the first eye hospital in India to bring a revolutionary technology in cataract surgery into the country.

LenSx laser which is expected to be a major breakthrough in cataract management was launched at the institute in October this year. Dr C M Wavikar, medical director of the Wavikar Eye Institute informed that from the time the technology has been launched at the institute they have conducted approximately 30 surgeries till date.

“LenSx is a path breaking technology in cataract management as it gives a distinct experience of absolute blade free surgery. The LenSx laser is supported by a live imaging system linked with the machine. This feature helps the operating surgeon to customize the cataract management for a particular patient, even while operating. Such a customized cataract procedure offers unparalleled precision.”

In Asia it was first launched in Philippines, followed by India, in fact India is the first country in South Asia to have this ultramodern technology. According to Jawed Zia, managing director, Alcon India “One of the main reasons for launching this technology in India is because it has a huge market potential in the country as there  many people who will be benefiting from this technology. Further he added, “This product launch highlights our firm commitment to eye care in India and we believe surgeons and their patients will benefit from the increased accuracy and control provided by the LenSx femtosecond laser.”

The LenSx laser is indicated for corneal and arcuate incisions, anterior capsulotomy and laser phaco-fragmentation during cataract surgery, providing a complementary surgical approach to certain manual steps within the traditional cataract procedure. The LenSx is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) and is already being used at various leading eye care centers across the globe.

The LenSx Laser brings the power of femtosecond laser technology, tried and tested in over three million eyes worldwide, to cataract surgery promising to transform it like never before. The LenSx laser provides surgeons a new level of predictability and control over critical manual steps during cataract removal – making those steps more precise and reliable.

Cataract, a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, accounts for blindness in over 70 per cent of the 12 million blind people in India. It is the most common cause of vision loss in people above 50 years, and is one of the major causes of blindness in the world.
