Ozone Group to set up Rs.2000-cr integrated pharma cluster ‘Jeevitham’ focused on formulation development

Nandita Vijay, BengaluruFriday, December 16, 2011, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

Ozone Group Infrastructure Developers is all set to set up a dedicated and state-of-the-art Integrated Pharma Cluster titled as ‘Jeevitham’. The Pharma Cluster spread over 330 acres is located at Chikkaballapur which is 30 kilometers away from Bengaluru. The Cluster will cater to the exclusive development of pharma formulations only.

This follows the Karnataka taking on the onus to organize the 63rd Indian Pharmaceutical Congress (IPC) in Bengaluru with a n objective to attract investments.

Of the 330 acres, 275 acres has been cleared by the State Level Single Window Clearance Committee (SLSWCC) and is awaiting the final nod from the High Level Clearance Committee (HLC)  which are for investments valued above Rs.50 crore chaired by the Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda.

The total value of the Jeevitham Pharma Cluster project is Rs.2000 crore where the Ozone Group is expected to pump in Rs.600 crore to provide the related infrastructure needs like the wide roads, water supply, power supply, effluent treatment plants, firefighting, security and solid waste management.

Apart from the production plants, analytical labs, research and development centre, the cluster is self contained with facilities including logistics and warehousing, cold storage and social amenities like residential, service apartments, business centre, banks, shopping centre and dispensaries.

The Infrastructure major will chip in as an enabler to set up the logistics and warehouses, training-cum- business centre, serviced apartments, business hotel, truck terminal, residential development besides ancillary services like printing, packaging to facilitate operational efficiencies.

Going by the promising prospects in the state for the development of formulations and considering the potential for outsourcing in the country, the Jeevitham Pharma Cluster is in sync with the 63rd IPC’s theme 'India: The Pharma Powerhouse'. It is a win-win situation for the pharma companies in the state, N Mohan, vice president, strategy and operations Ozone Group told Pharmabiz.

The Jeevitham Pharma Cluster will have serviced plots measuring from 1, 5, to 10 and 20 acres to suit the varying needs of pharma formulation production and technology development. Karnataka Drugs and Pharmaceutical Association (KDPMA) members are upbeat about the move as there has been a serious saturation of land in and around Bengaluru.

Moreover, the global pharma market is expected to provide  contract manufacture opportunity for generics as drugs with $13 billion have gone off patent in US in 2007 and another $60 billion will go off patent in 2012. This calls for a need for a pharma cluster, said P Lalith Kumar, vice president, corporate strategy, Ozone Group.

Project associates and consultants are KPMG, Jurong Master planners and Engineering Consultants, Jurong International Park Management, Ernst & Young who are the tax consultants & SEZ Process managers and Davis Langdon & Seah, the cost consultants.
