Novo Nordisk, the global leader in diabetes care and the  Indian Academy of Diabetes (IAD) focus on Insulin initiation and intensification for optimal patient care.

At the  Global Premix Summit - 2012 held at Delhi attended by over 500 doctors from across the globe, including Dr. Antonio Ceriello from Spain, Dr. Marc Evans from UK, Dr. Andreas Liebl from Germany, experts called for early insulinisation for type 2 diabetes and highlighted the role of premix analogues.

Various topics and issues relating to diabetes therapy were deliberated as it is now a huge dilemma to treat going by the increasing incidence in all age-groups.

The  summit was to discuss and debate on various treatments available in diabetes, update the physicians on the latest innovations in diabetes treatment as well as share best practices in diabetes management.

According to a recent data published, high blood sugar levels, delay in starting  insulin and a high level of diabetes-related complications remain common place for many people with type II diabetes across the world. This was a baseline data from A1chieve, a type 2 diabetes study with 66,726 people from 28 countries across the world including over 20,000 from India.

Data captured from people showed that over all diabetes control was poor with an average blood sugar level (HbA1c) of 9.5 per cent which is above the internationally recognized target of 7 per cent.  Up to 75% of participants had cardiovascular disease. Up to 84 per cent had other diabetes complications including kidney disease, eye problems, foot ulcers and neuropathy.

“In fact data’s and surveys such as these highlights the constant need to improve the management of diabetes patients globally. It is clear from the data that beginning and optimization of insulin therapy is often delayed, resulting in poor glycaemic control leading to diabetes complications. Summits such as these help doctors to keep abreast of the latest developments in insulin therapy” said Dr Shashank Joshi leading endocrinologist from Mumbai.

With 62 million people estimated to have diabetes in India it is critical that consultants, physicians and doctors are aware of the best in practice therapies to ensure optimal patient care.
