Surgeons at Mumbai based Surana Hospital & Research Centre have performed three complex surgeries using Oxinium implants during a special orthopedics camp being conducted by the hospital from April 15-30 at both their Malad and Chembur hospitals in the city. Dr Luca Marega, a world renowned orthopaedic joint replacement surgeon from the Instituto Clinico S.ANNA, Italy, has joined the team of four surgeons of the hospital to perform all the surgeries.

This is the latest innovation in medical technology in joint replacement / arthoplasty surgery which will now ensure that a patient no longer needs a revision surgery for her/his knee replacement 12-15 years as in the case of conventional implants, but 25-30 years with advanced, high-performance FDA-approved “Oxinium” knee implants, globally recognised as one of the best future medical innovations & advancements in knee & hip replacements -- providing much needed relief to younger joint replacement patients.

Dr Luca Marega shared his global experiences and expertise in working with special complex patient cases using the latest advancements in medical technology in orthopaedics with some of the city's leading orthopaedic surgeons.

The team will use the revolutionary FDA-approved Oxinium (oxidized zirconium) knee implants, a patented product of Smith and Nephew Knee Systems. Oxinium material is a revolutionary technology used in the production of components of knee and hip implants that exhibits superior performance characteristics due to its hardness, low-friction and resistance to roughening and abrasion. The implants help avoid repeat surgery for up to 30 years and breaks new ground in orthopaedic joint replacement treatment options now available globally. Oxinium has been shown to last twice as long as conventional implants that typically require replacement surgery after 10-15 years due to wear and tear

All the three surgeries performed were totally free of cost for the patients and their families at special camp, specially designed knee replacement package of almost 50 per cent discount will be offered to patients costing anywhere between Rs.1.3 lakh to Rs.1.70 lakh.

Speaking about his visit to Mumbai, Dr Luca Marega said, “When I first visited India in 2004, for perhaps historical or economic reasons, there were not many joint replacement surgeries done. Today, that has all changed. Not only do you see joint replacement surgeries being conducted in the bigger cities, but there is a growing demand even in smaller metros. With the very latest world-class joint replacement implants like Oxinium now available in India, younger patients can look forward to longer lasting high performance solutions for their knee and hip surgeries. I look forward to sharing my global experiences in the latest implant innovations in medical technology with some of India's most skilled orthopaedic surgeons who are helping patients overcome mobility challenges here.”

Elaborating on knee replacement surgeries in India Dr Santosh Shetty, Head of Department, Orthopaedic and Joint Replacements, Surana Hospital and Research Center said, “Knee replacement surgeries are growing by 25% and Hip replacement surgeries by 18-20% annually. This is because younger individuals in their 40s who have been physically active are experiencing joint pain lack of mobility and stiff knees caused by end-stage arthritis, osteoporosis, and other medical conditions that typically afflict older individuals. It is important that patients in Mumbai are given a choice of discussing with their orthopaedic surgeons the option of choosing the most technologically advanced global solutions in joint replacement surgeries like Oxinium which demonstrates much lower wear rates and last longer than conventional implants.”

Dr Neeraj Vora, renowned joint replacement surgeon, Mumbai said, “With the growing demand for surgeries, as busy medical professionals, it is impossible to attend more than a couple of global Orthopaedic forums every year. At the same time, it is our constant endeavour to offer our patients the entire range of the latest, most technologically advanced global solutions in joint replacement surgeries and that is why we welcome such platforms that encourage the useful exchange of knowledge between leading surgeons and professionals from around the world. There is a lot we learnt from Dr Luca Marega today and we thank him for sharing his insights and knowledge with us at Surana Hospital.”

Dr Prince D. Surana, Director, Surana Group of Hospitals said, “We at Surana Hospital & Research Centre are delighted and honoured to host a surgeon of global repute like Dr. Luca Marega and this knowledge sharing platform will immensely benefit our team of Orthopaedic surgeons at Surana Hospital. We at Surana Hospital today also want to educate the society that doing joint replacements is not only about the surgeries but also the types of implants used for the patient during the surgeries in regards with the changing international standards.”
