ICMR to begin one-year online diploma programme in bioethics

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has invited applications for the one-year online diploma programme in bioethics under the ICMR-IGNOU joint initiative. The programme is funded by Fogarty International Centre, National Institute of Health (NIH), USA and is being conducted by the National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR), Chennai.

The programme includes various methodologies of distance learning like virtual class, online study material and online exams. This diploma programme covers a wide range of courses in bioethics like philosophy, ethics in clinical and social science research related to health, research methodology, education and communication technologies, research ethics and health related laws.

The initiative is under the project “Centrally Co-ordinated Bioethics Education for India” which is continuation of “Long Term Training Programme in Bioethics for India”. Graduation in any discipline and working in healthcare services, social sciences and philosophy, etc., or engagement in activities related to institutional ethics committee are the main qualification for joining this programme.

They would be trained to promote ethical research and dissemination of bioethics education in their institutions. The primary objective is to equip them with necessary knowledge and skills to develop as leaders in teaching of bioethics and its application at various levels and settings.

The programme is designed to cause least problems in execution of routine activities of full time professionals. Trainees are required to complete eight courses spread over the year.

The one-year online diploma programme in Bioethics as distance learning was launched in the year 2011 under the ICMR-IGNOU joint initiative. The first batch of 43 trainees will be completing this one year programme in June 2012.
