India's commercial , financial and creative capital, Mumbai, is all set to witness CPhI India and its co-located events P-MEC/ICSE/BioPh India , largest and most comprehensive pharmaceutical industry event in South Asia .The event  is  taking place at a time when profound changes are taking place in the international political landscape, which give a new hope for the pharma industry to surge ahead.

Indian generic market, which is moving ahead at a scorching pace as over US$140 billion drugs are going off patent by 2015, will get a booster shot from US President Barack Obama's re-election leading to more generic prescriptions. With health cover being extended to more Americans, the pressure to prescribe and shift to generics will give a further leg up for the industry.

The Indian pharma industry has been consistently growing at a CAGR of more than 15 per cent  over the last five years. The healthy growth reflects the inherent strengths of the industry and improving healthcare standards in the country. If this trend continues, the Indian pharma industry is likely to be one of the top 10 global markets by value by 2020, according to a PwC report.

From being a market, almost completely dominated by multinational companies (MNCs) with a high concentration on exports of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and generics, India has now proved its prowess in the areas of manufacturing, drug discovery and research. The domestic industry is now moving into the phase of innovation, with a large players as well as smaller niche players, strengthening their research and drug development capabilities and expanding to the developed and regulated international markets.

Thus while the Indian pharmaceutical market is growing  twice the world market growth rate, it is also fast evolving into a cradle for new drugs. Being one of the strongest emerging markets in the global pharma industry, India presents great opportunities for all international pharmaceutical companies to explore and benefit from.
