L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad has formally announced its strategic initiatives to establish six more new eye care institutes on par with global standards in the next 25 years.

As a part of its road map for the next 25 years, the institute is expected to come up with six more institutes which include Academy for eye care education, Institute for regenerative ophthalmology, Child sight Institute, Institute of eye care for the elderly, Institute for eye cancer and Centre of excellence in eye banking. These Centres of Excellence represent many unique features that focus on the most relevant challenges, especially concerning the neglected, vulnerable, and underserved populations.

Having successfully completed 25 years of its journey last year, with this announcement, LVPEI has devised a clear road map for its next quarter journey a head. Since its inception in 1987 LVPEI has demonstrated the highest level of competency in all its engagements and has built for itself a global repute in delivering world class services, research and educational programmes in the field of Ophthalmology.

While announcing the new institutes for the next 25 years at LV Prasad campus in the city, Dr Gullapalli N Rao, founder and chairman of LVPEI said, “While much has been achieved, a lot more needs to be done to address the problems of blindness and visual impairment in India and the world. LVPEI would like to continue to play its role locally, nationally and globally as a responsible and responsive health care organization, and consolidate its position as one of the leading eye care organizations in the world. As we plan our future, the following are the first initiatives we wish to launch at this stage - six ‘Centres of Excellence’ focusing on specific areas of need employing the latest knowledge and technology as well as making significant contributions to that pool.”

As a head start to the launch of “LVPEI - Next 25” a research paper will be published which is funded by a Wellcome Trust as an initiative between LVPEI and the University of Sheffield. The paper is expected to announce a breakthrough cheaper technique to restore vision for blindness due to chemical burns.

Dr Virender Sangwan, director of Clinical Research at LVPEI is expected to Head the proposed Institute for Regenerative Ophthalmology.
