The Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved 100 seats each to Nizamabad and Adilabad Medical Colleges in Andhra Pradesh for the current academic year.

With MCI approving establishment of a new medical college in Nizamabad and recognising another medical college in Adilabad district in Andhra Pradesh, the state gained another 200 MBBS seats for the current academic year.

In addition to the earlier 400 seats approved by the MCI, the total MBBS seats added to the state for the current academic year has gone up to 600.

The newly established medical college at Nizamabad will have 100 MBBS seats and the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Adilabad district will have another 100 medical seats.

Nizamabad and Adilabad are the two northern Telangana districts, which have been striving hard to establish medical educational institutions during the past four decades. With the latest recognition and approval of additional seats by MCI to medical education institutions, the dreams of medical aspirants in these two districts have come true.

Earlier last week, P Sudarshan Reddy the minister for major and medium irrigation who represents a constituency in Nizamabad district officially declared the sanction of medical college to the district.

Particularly the Nizamabad district had no government or private medical college, while all the other nine districts in the Telangana region had either a government or private medical college.

With this new enhancement of seats the students from these districts can now opt for medical courses within their own district without having to go far flung areas.

While this is positive side of the aspect, in another case, the MCI has declined the proposal for an increase of medical seats to Deccan College of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad citing lower standards and pulled up the college authorities for not adhering to quality standards as per the MCI norms.

The MCI is sending doctors to inspect the medical colleges before renewing the permissions to the medical colleges. Apollo Institute of medical sciences and research, in Hyderabad, Fathima institute of medical sciences in Kadapah and the Deccan College of Medical Sciences will get their renewals only after the doctors inspect and give their final report to MCI.
