CPhI China returns to Shanghai on a larger scale

Our Bureau, MumbaiThursday, June 20, 2013, 08:00 Hrs  [IST]

China has increasingly become a focal point of the global pharmaceutical industry. Rising incomes, improving healthcare infrastructure and enhanced insurance systems have propelled the Chinese pharmaceutical market to become the third-largest in the world.

Fuelled by increasing healthcare demands within its own borders as well as by international companies seeking manufacturing facilities, China's hunger for foreign partnerships and pharmaceutical ingredients presents a great opportunity for international and domestic suppliers and buyers.

The entry of multinational companies has granted local manufacturers access to advanced technologies and further aided market development in the country. In fact, the market in China has already consolidated its strategic position globally with local mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures and investments in private infrastructure are expected to go up significantly.

According to a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan , Chinese pharmaceutical market earned revenues of $131.63 billion in 2012 and estimates this to more than double to $ 280.30 billion in 2016.

"Apart from the opportunities created by government healthcare reforms for essential drug systems as well as medical insurance and primary healthcare solutions, the impending expiry of several drug patents boosts the prospects of local pharmaceutical manufacturers in China," said the analysis.

While government reforms have fuelled market growth, they have also led to challenges in essential drug tendering, market access, and price setting, affecting certain manufacturers' margins in the country.

In this context CPhI China, an event organised by UBM Live and UBM Sinoexpo, which is returning to the Shanghai New International Expo Center for the 13th consecutive year holds special significance. The event is being held from June 25 to 27 with an increased scale, more informative exhibitions and regional networking opportunities and a greater range of content services than it has ever offered before.

"With a view to enhancing the customer experience and ROI value, we have added high value conferences and live laboratory showcases. The Show Daily is being re-launched at this year’s event to assist attendees in staying on the pulse of the day’s events, topical news and product launches, alongside in-depth features and valuable insight across the Chinese pharma market", says Erik Heemskerk, Brand Director for CPhI China.

"Additionally, we have launched a mobile application – available in both Mandarin and English - that keeps attendees connected with all information they need instantly. This application has been designed to free-up the event experience and is a convenient tool to not only navigate around the exhibition, but also to arrange and manage meetings on the go. One final point for this year is an increased focus on R&D with LABWorld, BioPharma and ICSE all contained in one hall", he added.

The event is expected to attract 2,500 exhibitors, and 30,000 visitors from more than 100 countries. It is a unique one-stop platform to meet current partners, build new relationships, evaluate pharmaceutical products and learn about the latest industry trends.

The number of exhibitors has seen a tremendous upsurge thanks to increased Chinese manufacturing opportunities and huge growth in China’s generics sector. This rapid development, coupled with the evolving regulatory landscape is attracting both domestic and international investors to the Chinese market.

CPhI China 2013 is a must attend event for anyone interested in breaking into China’s pharmaceuticals market and establishing Chinese partners.

“In 2012, the size of the Chinese pharmaceutical market reached 926.1 billion RMB, and is expected to expand at an annual rate of 12 per cent from 2013 to 2020” says Nik Rudge, Managing Director at UBM Live.

“Today, leading Chinese CROs and pharmaceutical companies are able to offer high quality, cost-effective services on a global scale with growth rates forecast to far outpace the rest of the industry. The increasing ability of Chinese companies to meet international standards in drug quality and safety, coupled with strong growth in the local market, makes this is a must attend event for any pharmaceutical company in 2013 – whether Chinese, regional or international in focus”, he added.

The co-located events
The co-located events for the 2013 edition are P-MEC China, which covers machinery and equipment; ICSE China, for companies providing outsourcing services in custom synthesis and clinical trials; BioPh China, a dedicated platform for biopharmaceuticals; and InnoPack, focussed on bringing global packaging solutions to the Chinese pharma companies.
