The Andhra Pradesh state government has released Rs. 182.11 core for the establishment of Padmavathi Women’s Medical College in Chittoor district.

Issuing an order in this regard, medical and healthcare principal secretary Ajay Sahani informed that the state government is taking all the initiatives to speed up the establishment of the Women’s Medical Colleges.

In view of this, the state government has already issued essentiality certificate for the college. The new medical college will have 150 MBBS seats and the institute will be affiliated to Srivenkateswa Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) in Tirupati.

In addition to the support given by the state government, the upcoming new women’s medical college is also expected to be funded by Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam (TTD).

Another Government Medical college which is scheduled to be commenced in Nellore district is awaiting the clearance from Medical Council of India (MCI). Official sources revealed that the delay in clearance is due to non-submission of relevant documents for the sanction.

At present there are 15 government medical colleges in the state offering MBBS and other Medical PG courses. The intake of government medical colleges in the state is about 2400 students per annum.

In addition to 15 government medical colleges, there are around 28 medical colleges running under private managements and altogether these colleges have a cumulative intake of 3800 students per year. In all both the private and government colleges are offering MBBS courses to about 5200 students annually in the state.

For the academic year 2013-14 the MCI has granted additional intake of 250 seats in the private colleges and about 500 seats are added in the government medical colleges in the state.
