Health Canada informs professionals, patients on antiviral drug, Telzir used for HIV treatment

CanadaFriday, February 21, 2014, 09:00 Hrs  [IST]

Health Canada has started informing health professionals and patients of new safety information regarding Telzir (fosamprenavir calcium), an antiviral drug, which is used in combination with other antiviral agents to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in adults and children six years of age and older.

Telzir should not be used with the antiarrhythmic drugs amiodarone, lidocaine (systemic), or quinidine, as this may cause serious and/or life-threatening reactions such as abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmias).

In addition, Telzir should not be used with delavirdine, another antiviral drug to treat HIV, because it may reduce the effectiveness of delavirdine.

The product labels have been updated to better reflect the new recommendations regarding the safe use of these medicines.

If any patient has used Telzir should talk to a healthcare professional regarding any questions or concerns you may have about your treatment. Do not stop treatment without consulting with your doctor or healthcare professional.

If any adverse events occur report a side effect to a health product to Health Canada or call toll-free at 1-866-234-2345.
