Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, an integrated global pharma company, announced the launch of Melgain, lotion that has been approved for the treatment of vitiligo, to benefit patients of the skin pigmentation disorder in India. The medication has been launched in partnership with Issar Pharmaceuticals to increase access to a novel treatment for vitiligo patients in India.

Globally, Melgain lotion (decapeptide) is the first peptide-based drug for the treatment of vitiligo. It has been indigenously developed in India. Melgain lotion is the only patented decapeptide derived from basic fibroblast growth factor, a substance the body naturally produces for maintaining the structure and function of melanin producing cells. Melgain lotion is safe and efficacious in vitiligo cases involving various areas of the body, as established by a number of clinical studies. Its safety is well established for treating children as well.

Melgain lotion leads to re-pigmentation in 80 per cent to 90 per cent of patients, as compared to 60 per cent of patients who respond to other medical treatments such as corticosteroids and phototherapy. The studies have also shown that patients respond faster when Melgain lotion is used in combination with other medical treatments options.

Vitiligo is a skin disease that leads to white patches on the body due to the loss of normal skin pigment called melanin. It is a very common disease that affects all races, and is estimated to affect about 5 crore people in India. Vitiligo leads to emotional distress as the disease affects the appearance of the patient. As white patches are more obvious on generally dark Indian skin, the condition is socially stigmatised. In a study, 54.5 per cent patients suffering from vitiligo were found to be depressed. On an average, an Indian dermatologist who treats Vitiligo sees 20 patients in a month.

Melgain lotion’s unique mechanism of action enhances re-pigmentation when used in combination with other therapies. To ensure that the active drug penetrates the skin, Melgain lotion has been fortified with skin penetration enhancers, leading to optimal outcomes. Melgain is Dr Reddy’s attempt to support vitiligo patients in overcoming the disease, regaining skin color and reducing associated emotional distress.
