Al Shifa College of Pharmacy hosts pharmacy practice module

Al Shifa College of Pharmacy, Perinthalmanna, Kerala took up the responsibility of hosting 8th Module and conducted successfully between 5th and 7th of November with accolades from all around.

Inauguration of the Module commenced at 10 am on 5th November 2014 with Dr. B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India as Chief Guest and Prof. K. Chinnaswamy, President, Indian Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, Chennai as President of the function. Mr. P. Unneen, Managing Trustee, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy and Prof. Krishna Kumar, International President, Indian Association of Colleges of Pharmacy as Guests of Honours.

Dr. TNK. Suriyaprakash, Principal, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy welcomed the gathering. In his speech, Dr. TNK Suriyaprakash highlighted the reason for conducting this programme and also elaborated the importance of this Module.

In his presidential address, Prof. K. Chinnaswamy elaborated the genesis of this IACP and elaborated about the previous 7 Modules. He also expressed his happiness and satisfaction about the arrangements for this programme.

Dr. B. Suresh, in his inaugural address, stressed the importance and relevance of Pharmacy Practice in India and also highlighted the utility and service of Pharm.D graduates, which they will render to the practice of pharmacy in hospital and community sectors. Their role will be understood better in coming days and they should train better to overcome challenges in present set up, highlighted by the chief guest. The points mooted by the chief guest were very well received by the gathering of more than 1000 pharmacy students and professionals.

P. Unneen and Prof. Krishna Kumar, in their address elaborated the role of pharmacists in India and abroad respectively. Dr. T.K. Ravi, Principal, College of Pharmacy, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Coimbatore and Dr. B. Jayakar, Principal, College of Pharmacy, Vinayaka Missions University, Salem felicitated the gathering.

During the course of inauguration, Dr. B. Suresh released ‘Hospital Formulary’ 3rd edition, Prof. K. Chinnaswamy released ‘Guidelines for 14 Diseases’, Prof. Krishna Kumar released ‘Shifa ClinPharm Newsletter’ and Dr. T. K. Ravi released ‘Clerkship Record’.

Dr. Dilip C, Head, Department of Pharmacy Practice delivered vote of thanks.

After inaugural function, Prof Krishna Kumar, Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmacokinetics of the College of Pharmacy, Howard University, Washington DC, USA elaborated on concepts of Bio-pharmaceutic and Pharmacokinetic principles to nearly 300 delegates from many parts of India.

Next two days, i.e. 6th and 7th, Prof. Sharon See BS, PharmD, Associate Clinical Professor in the Clinical Pharmacy Practice Department at St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, New York, USA and Prof. Michelle T. Martin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice, College of Pharmacy, University of Illinois at Chicago, USA took the classes in tandem and covered GERD, PUD and Liver Disease and Cirrhosis, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) respectively. The delegates got firsthand experience of Pharmacy Practice in USA from these three resource persons of high caliber. Their in depth analysis of the disease was eye opener to the delegates which comprises of many principals, senior professors, lecturers and students of Pharm.D and M.Pharm (Pharmacy Practice).

On 7th evening valedictory function was organised with Prof. Chinnaswamy as President and Dr. C.P. Jaffer, Chief Physician, Al Shifa Hospital as Chief Guest. Mohammed Haneefa welcomed the gathering and Dr. TNK. Suriyaprakash, Principal, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy delivered vote of thanks and Module 8 concluded successfully.
